Celebrating Webloggers Worldwide™

This site is now available via the URL www.inweday.org. Please update your listings accordingly.

Started as a grass-roots project in the spring of 2004, International Weblogger's Day, or InWeDay for short, is an unofficial online celebration held annually on June 14th. It has united in the past over 500 bloggers from over 40 nations, and has become a symbol of unity among bloggers in recognition of the power that bloggers have through the words they write. As it nears the fourth celebration, plans are in place to make it the best and biggest one ever.

Imagine ...

Imagine for a moment that with a flick of a giant switch, Blogger, Xanga, WordPress, Moveable Type, Typepad, and all the blogging platforms online just vanished, leaving no trace behind. Bye bye BoingBoing, Kottke is kaput, and Technorati would be rather bare. Could we bear that? Blogging has changed from being simply a personal journal designed to give us a sense of our past to becoming a medium, a channel through which words work to change things, be it ourselves, those around us, or the world beyond.

The history

InWeDay first saw the light of day back in 2004, when a blogger by the name of Rio Akasaka used his webpage, several comments on blogs he encountered, and a rudimentary logo to spread the idea. Back then, InWeDay was celebrated on the 9th of June, but since the date had little symbolic representation, it was moved to the 14th of June in 2005, for reasons that are detailed here. In 2005, the celebration saw 587 blogs from 43 countries represented. Since then, InWeDay has been gathering momentum, with more and more meetups and more and more people participating in a truly global event.
